TikTok Effect Design

Role : Motion designer

In my role as a senior motion graphics designer on the TikTok Effect Design team, I was responsible for crafting captivating effects that would entice users to engage more actively with the platform and inspire them to tell their own stories.

During the production of each effects, I oversaw every aspect of the effect production process, from ideation and asset creation to UX design and technical problem-solving. I have created over +100 AR effects so far.

Palm Reading

I created Palm Reading from scratch, handling everything from concept to visual scripting. The effect prompts users to scan their palm and generates personalized readings based on its lines. It went viral globally, with over 7M videos, 400M plays, and 31M likes in the US alone.

1. Ideation
  • Community Research

Tiktok has a big psychic community. Many users follow contents like palmistry, spiritualism, astrology and fortune telling.

  • User Psychology

Users love to be told who they are, whether or not about their future, their personalities or their life events.

  • Simple Interaction

Simpler interaction always have better user engagement rate, compare to complex interaction.

2. Initial approach

At the beginning, it was going to be simple randomizer effect that scans the palm to shows results for the palm line reading

UXUI Workflow

1. Prompt to say "Show your palm"

2. User shows palm and circle of inverted color filter appears.

3. Palm reading results appears in the palm.

3. Final design

Following the initial iteration, I made the changes in order to enhance the user's palm reading experience. This involved the inserting of the psychic's hand and the integration of a tarot card design for delivering results, thereby creating a more realistic and engaging user experience.

UXUI Workflow

1. Prompt to say "Show your palm"

2. User shows palm and circle of inverted color filter appears.

3. 3D palm reader appears in screen and reads user's palm lines.

4. Smoke animation reveals the result in tarot card.

Hand design

To address concerns related to skin color and potential religious connotations that could be sensitive on the platform, we underwent several iterations to ensure inclusivity for all users. Ultimately, we selected a design with a space and universe aesthetic, creating a more mysterious atmosphere.

Result cards

It's crucial that all the results feel relatable and personal, allowing users to express either humorous or emotional reactions. In terms of design, we mimicked tarot card aesthetics to further enhancing the mysterious atmosphere. We created total of 16 results that was randomized each time user opens the effect.

Putting it all together

Once the hand had been modeled, rigged, and animated in C4D. it was then imported into the visual scripting software and integrated with the other components of the effect.

4. Result

The user response was overwhelmingly positive, and the effect gained viral popularity worldwide with over 7 million user video creation, 400 million plays and 31 million likes in the US alone. Many users found the results to be surprisingly accurate and reacted with humor.

Additionally, a noteworthy segment of users reported experiencing a sensation of the hand touching their actual hand, which adds an intriguing dimension to the feedback.
